Interview with Andy Smith: an experienced and passionate male carer

We recently spoke with Andy Smith, Kare Plus Homecarer at Kare Plus Norwich. Andy is a passionate member of staff that goes above and beyond for customers. His dedication to providing excellent care recently earned him the Kare Hero of the Month award.

Why did you join Kare Plus ?

“I’d been working in healthcare for some 17 years before I joined Kare Plus, I’d heard good things from other homecarers about the company, which were confirmed after I enquired about a job, I started shortly after!.”

What is the most rewarding aspect of your role?

“I believe homecare is a vital service. It enables people to continue living life in their own home, so just being a part of that is rewarding. It’s so fulfilling to see people as they recover after a stay in hospital or following an illness, especially as I play an active part in that process.”

How do you find people react to the fact you are a male Home Carer?

“In the time I’ve worked in care, I have never met a customer that has considered it an issue. My customers are always happy with quality of care they receive, which is what I always strive to achieve.”

Do you feel you’ve grown and improved since becoming part of the Kare Plus Norwich Team?

“Definitely. Even though I’ve worked in the industry for almost twenty years, working for Kare Plus Norwich has given me a much deeper understanding of healthcare and homecare services.”

What would you say to other men that anxious about joining the healthcare industry?

“Before I became a carer I only knew one other male carer, so I was anxious about joining the industry myself. Since then though, the number of men working in the field of healthcare has definitely increased. So I’d say, don’t delay, start a career in healthcare now.”

Using only one word, how would you sum up your role as a carer?

“Fulfilling.”
